A mate of mine's a Rochdale fan

Last season (was it? poss the one before) they were in with a shout for auto during the run-in and ended up in the playoffs. He was delighted, for exactly the reasons you point out, and he did get a day at Wembley, and overall he's still glad they fetched up 3rd. However: they're still in the same division.

Me, I'd take a trophyless second every day rather than risk staying down , possibly on a bad reffing display etc.
