This could get right serious hare....

to totally oversimplify the subject, religion quite likely started as a way to explain the unexplained and give people the feeling of at least limited control (e.g. prayer, sacrifice, etc) over uncontrollable and inexplicable events.

Very quickly, some people realised it was also a wonderful tool for controlling the populace on a whole spectrum of scales. And if a populace needs to be manipulated into any sort of behaviour, then it suggest that it's not the natural behaviour.

Which means those who never stray outside the rules of the vehicle of control will be in a tiny minority.
