PC switched on and the Squeezbox server software running - though you will be able to access internet radio/LastFM & similar while your PC is turned off. i *think* there is provided somewhere you can upload your music online and it'll then play it from there, but i get the feeling you might have to pay for that - or the storage size is on the small side for the free version
