International money transfers - question...

If you were to want to transfer a cheque in excess of, say ?5,000 from Ireland to England, what would be the most efficient way of doing it? Pay it in to the Irish bank account and do a money transfer to the English account, or get the cheque sent directly to England and get the English account to cash it?
