the laws of the game are exactly the same in a midtable league 1 game or a World Cup playoff. And likewise the penalties for contravening those rules are exactly the same in the two games.

I think it's a bit mad to suggest that a player in a big game should behave more honestly than he would in a less important game. Which is where your nuance would take you.
