When we got married, Mrs Git gave me a lovely antique Longines gold watch. It wasn't very reliable but it was very beautiful. I don't set much store by objects, but this was one of the few that I really treasured as a reminder of a wonderful day.
It's missing. I don't even know what happened to it. I may have taken it for repair and lost the ticket. I may have left it on my desk and had it stolen by a cleaner or a kleptomaniac colleague. I may just have lost it. I didn't wear it all the time (partly because it was fragile and partly because it was sometimes away being repaired) and so I just suddenly realised that it was gone. It makes me feel sad every time I think about it. Now I just wear cheapo prep school type watches, or a giant plastic Suunto altimeter I have for hill walking. Getting a proper watch would seem disloyal, somehow.
