Sure it's didactic for someone as well informed politically as you. Back at the turn of the century people really thought they were poor because that's the way it is and has to be and needed the "money trick" explained to them. And possibly still do - how many people know Marx's Theory of Surplus Value? Interesting back story to Tressell (real name Noonan) too - seems he was the illegitimate son of an Irish RM. He was a painter & decorator too and really did paint a mural in a Hastings church (fragments in the local museum now I think). He died a pauper in a Liverpool workhouse and buried in an unmarked, mass grave they only discovered in the 70s. Have you read Jack London's The Iron Heel? Similar didactical work; but much shorter than RTP and perhaps more suited to your attention span ;)
