OK. So that's clearer.

the former - that you don't think it is at all - was that protest votes for the BNP were a signal to the other parties that they need to move in the *direction* of the BNP.

So instead, you think that the views of the BNP are completely irrelevant in all this, and it's a more vague protest that the others just need to be 'better'.

My point is that I don't really know what that means. How does that improve things, when they've not been given any signal as to what 'better' means?
