the serious question - which I think APB is alluding to above, too - is whether 'protest votes' for the BNP are a signal to the other parties that they need to move some way in teh *direction* of the BNP.

Or whether the views of the BNP are completely irrelevant in all this, and it's some kind of more vague protest that the others just need to be 'better', somehow.

Matters quite a lot, when you think about it. The fact that you used immigration as you example I suppose suggests you think it's the former?
