Have you ever seen Manufacturing Consent, Worzel?

In it, Chomsky talks about the way the centre-right and its media manage threats from left and right. Rather than bar their leading lights from any media representation (which would provide a justified sense of exclusion around which they could rally), they invite such people to represent themselves in the media, and then prevent them representing themselves effectively through such simple techniques as cutting them off.

Well worth watching, it's very insightful (and long).
