I don't like the idea of taking a player we know isn't good enough to start

and this dead ball thing rather confuses me. Why do you want a deadball specialist availabvle to bring on? Do we know we'll win more free-kicks and corners near the end of a game or something?

Either his set pieces mean he's worth having on the pitch, at the expense of all the things he doesn't do (like making runs), or they don't. But I don't see why those qualities get more valuable as a game goes on.

(Indeed, if anything, I'd have thought it's the reverse - *pace* is what you'd like to have in an impact sub.)
