Food is very good - Swedish meatballs are a bit of a cliche, of course; but they're very good. Plenty of fish too as you might expect. And since it's winter you should be able to find reindeer as well (dark, tender, fairly rich meat - yummo). And, as it's Christmas, gingerbread rules. As for Stockholm culture, I don't really know - Swedes are generally very friendly and the city's lively as I recall. Not sure about New Year per se; but Christmas is a big event - I expect there will be Christmas markets. Stockholm's surrounded by loads of islands - I've never been to any; but I'm told they're worth a trip out for a meal say.
If it was me, I'd take lots of warm clothes and go!
