It's to do with the compression of the video data. You think the UK is bad, wait until

you see the Dutch version. All very OK, but the UK digital TV signals are far, far crisper even without HD.

The Dutch are tight arses of course, and will try to squeeze as many channels into a tiny bandwidth as possible.
