I fear you may be exaggerating on both sides

Did anyone ever saying they were "going to be great", and is playing regularly in football league your definition of "s**t"?

Look at any of the FA Youth Cup winning sides and you'll see tons of players who never made it; it is not just a Norwich problem.

I think, over the years, Norwich have had good service from any number of players who have come up through the ranks; and many of those (Sutch, Haylock, Coote) have had sections of the crowd very much against them.
