Norwich cleared, Everton insistent over of racist abuse claim
Sunday 11 Jan 2004
Norwich City fans will not face any action over allegations that they made racist chants against an Everton footballer during last Saturday's FA Cup defeat.

The FA today issued a statement clearing Norwich supporters of any wrongdoing which read: "In relation to media reports of alleged racist abuse by Norwich City fans, The FA can confirm that it received no official reports on this matter.

"Furthermore, enquiries conducted by The FA with officials involved in the ground safety operation at Everton found that there was no clear evidence of any racist comments made by the Norwich supporters.?

Norwich city are now seeking an apology from Everton.

However Ian Ross, head of corporate affairs at Everton Football Club, said: "We've made it perfectly clear the chain of events which happened on Saturday. Everton Football Club has talked to all the senior people involved and we've had it confirmed by all of them that the initial chanting was of a racist nature.

"It was not Everton Football Club who brought this matter to light, but members of the national media. The Football Association have not said this did not happen. But we did not make any complaints about this anyway.

"If Norwich City are demanding an apology, we don't know what it is for. We have not done anything wrong and we have not accused Norwich fans of doing anything wrong. We acted in a wholly professional manner throughout.

"If Norwich City are looking for someone to apologise, they should go to the national press who raised the issue in the first place ? we did not set this ball rolling.

"We have a good relationship with Norwich City and hope to see them in the Premiership next season."

Neil Doncaster, Norwich City's chief executive, said: "We're very pleased that, like Merseyside Police officers on duty on the day, the FA have found no clear evidence of any racist chanting by our supporters who were at Goodison Park on Saturday and that they don't intend to take any further action.?
