When I first hitched, I didn't use boards thinking (for some reason) it would give drivers an excuse not to pick us up or something.

It took me and a mate 8 hours and about 6 lifts to get to Birmingham. Used boards every time after and it was a breeze.

But sheeeet - there are some bad drivers out there. Proper gave me the willies.
