Ireland hadn't long won our independance and so couldn't afford to get involved

(800 years of being f**ked over would kind of do that to a country)

Ireland tended to give much 'unofficial' help to the UK, though the Irish government censored all news to keep what was really happening away from public knowledge (it was officially called 'The Crisis' i think)

though that's not to say that some of the hard-line republicans were above the view of "he who is my enemy's enemy is my friend" and actively sided with the Nazis in the somewhat misguided hope of gaining a united Ireland
