This is how it was done.

It was a cheap camera trick, pure and simple. There was no point of the second camera position (the long shot) on Wednesday apart from the opportunity to switch from a pre-recorded intro to the show with Derren and the hand-held cameraman doing the close-up, back to live shot from a static camera position when Derren was waving his arms. Once he'd demonstrated the balls on the plinth and moved to the TV, a split-screen was employed with the left half showing a recording of the balls whilst the right hand side was live with Derren doing his thing. The recorded side of the split screen allowed an assistant to deploy real lottery numbers in the rack after the draw had been made. Once the correct balls had been placed, the whole shot was made live (the moment the far left ball rose a little). And surprise surprise Derren's got it right!

Do like his showmanship though and am intrigued to see if he really can make me stick to my seat next Friday!
