His 'year of my life' comment was an interesting one

it's possible he spent a year filming all the different outcomes.

If you watch closely there is a point (bearing in mind the camera was swaying loads during the 'stunt') that everything totally freezes, it's possible the switch could have been made then.

Hope there is more to it than that, but I can't see anything other than camera trickery/switching.
