but remove the BBC from the equation

and television would be pretty much 24 hour news and wall to wall reality TV. I know the BBC do some reality TV but they are not really a state media organ as such and do provide a counterpoint to the en masse dumbing down of the airwaves. It's survival of the fittest. Adapt or perish.
