There's been some interesting discussions on Radio 4's "The Media Show" over the last few weeks, well worth a listen.

Auntie Beeb has a budget of many millions of tax payers (our) money in which to fund the BBC operation which commercial websites (eg Archant) try to compete with.

I can't see how they can, unless they're real niche and of quality (eg the Financial Times).
