The A's and B's will be far more important than the subject in my opinion

like you say it might be worth doing the maths at AS only. I've not worked in a sixth form so I'm not sure how the system works but don't you take up to 5 AS's and then drop 1 or 2 for A Level? Seems like the best move might be to do AS maths and if he does well carry it on and if not drop it and nothing is lost.

BTW the one thing I'd also say is shiny new buildings can hide a multitude of sins. All schools are capable of making themselves look wonderful when you visit!!! I'm sure you have already, but I'd check out the results and OFSTED inspections too.
