iPlayer used to work in the same way, and i think 4oD still does

when these things were new i had SkyPlayer (or whatever they called it back then) installed on my PC, i used to control its access through ZoneAlarm for a while before taking it out of the startup registry whatsit so that then it'd only fire up when i manually started SkyPlayer
