to be fair I've only seen the BBC web coverage, which seems fine.

It's true that with serial killers there are often copycat attempts following media exposure. You can't really not cover something like Dunblane or Columbine though.

In a perfect world everyone woudl agree not to print huge pictures on front pages of the Thomas Hamiltons of this world, but you know that large sections of the public want to see "the face of a monster" etc.

Difficult to get the balance right.
