Surely better just to put heftly singles on the long shots

Avoids the risk of a "cert" not coming in and then get a bigger reward when one of the long shots does.

But I agree it's a mug's game. As my father once pointed out:

People who bet on the horses
See their castles go up in smoke
Horses don't bet on people
And that's why they never go broke
