for reliability: most german cars (especially vw - and better value than bmw or audi) or volvo (you see plenty of 20+ year old volvo estates running around with no rust on them!). Out of the jap cars Toyota are the most reliable - most taxi drivers int he west country drive toyota avensis for that reason.

avoid: vauxhall and alpha's - - we had a fleet of alpha's for compoany cars - most had MAJOR problems at 6 months old!!! costly and never again! Avoid citroen and renault - in fact avoid ANYTHING french including their over-rated food, Their cars are just as s**t and over-rated as the entire country.

run of the mill: honda, ford - - good deaqls to be had and less of a concern if you intend only to run the car for a few years.
