Every match you can pay one thousand pounds to be a centre back, and for an extra thousand you get to wear the captain's armband too.

Result money in, wage bill reduced, no greater liability than current incumbent.

They could even just add it to the mascot's package. Instead of have your photo taken with the captain - become the captain.
