I think we could afford 2.5m rising to 3.5m with promotion/goals etc and a sell-on

but Reading have their rich chairman and should be close to the top 6 this season, so I wouldn't expect him to go until Jan anyway, when he can see Reading's situation, and Prem clubs may be interested
