They're lanterns they use at Irish style weddings.

A candle is put inside a paper lantern, the hot air takes the lantern and candle up and bingo! Instant UFOs that are noiseless and travel as fast or slow as the wind.

I saw 7/8 a couple of weeks ago and they scared the crap out of me....
