Well, put up a fence and sit behind it

Seriously, though, it seems to me that it basically attracts four types of people:
1. artists (for want of a better word) looking to show off their work (see also 2)
2. attention seekers who failed to get onto a reality show
3. those who want a soapbox
4. those who lost a bet or similar (like yourself I think?)

Don't know much about the concept of the plinth thing; but it seems to me that only the fourth category consists of ordinary people and since the other three categories will be showing off to varying degrees then doing something ordinary is the really radical thing to do.
