You know all the mysterious figures carved into hillsides around the country? White Horses, men with clubs and big nobs etc.?
I reckon they were advertising. Seriously. Man tends to trade, and to think hard about increasing his business. In a country without roads and with only word of mouth to serve as a business aid, early man wouldv'e wanted people to know where they could buy a horse.
"There's a bloke sells horses over to the east - head east and look for the big horse on the hill".
Similarly, the bloke with the club and the big nob: you can hire a mercenary army here. All big lads with their own weapons. healthy lads, too, big nobs throughout.
The big nob thing, I reckon, can be explained by the business about the Greeks and Romans carving their statues with small dicks to imply intelligence and wisdom - people with big nobs were seen as being thick and thuggish.
I have nothing to back up any of this, of course.
