iphoners. Do you know if there's a way of removing previous personal data off

the phone, when someone gives you their old one. ie stopping it from saying the originals username when you usb it to the pc

Or am I assuming you need to restore and reset the whole thing, losing the apps, meaning if you want them, and the phone in your name, you need to buy them yourself?
