yehhbut when they're cycling together, they interact with each other

ie all follow the pacemaker, try and cover attacks, choose when to try and clos gaps, get pulled along by team-mates etc.

On the (individual) time trial you're on your own, and it's all about chossing the best steady pace that you can maintain for the entire stage, to do it in the quickest time possible.

There's a real skill to it - some Tour winners in the past (Miguel Indurain, for example, who won loads of tours in the 80s/90s) basically won the Tour by blowing everyone else away on the time trials.
