but if we *lose* today, we will almost certainly lose the Ashes, because the pyschological blow to us of chucking this away in these circumstances (ie easily the biggest ever final innings winning total in Test history, and clearly a major tactics f*ck-up by us) would be crippling.

And the boost to them would be hooge too.
