Whereas in fact, he's unpopular there because he disappeared, because AC Milan wanted him.

And he's unpopular there because it's recognised he's likely to disappear again, both because Milan may well want him again, and because Capello has signalled he has a decent choice of getting to the next World Cup, but he needs to play in Europe to do so.

I suspect that when he went to play in the US, he'd have happily accepted that kind of 'going tits up'.
