It does seem silly to me

There's really only one thing that people are interested in: who's going to do the whole thing in the fastest time? If they want to know who's the fastest climber they should have a separate event called "Tour des Alps" or something, which was just about hill climbs. If they want to know who's the best sprinter, they should have a series of sprints. It feels faintly ridiculous (to me) to have Cavendish being lauded to the skies when every time it's a mountain stage he's puffing away at the very back. I understand that hills aren't his thing, but in that case, what's the point of making the sprinters do them? Just to tire them out before they get back to doing what they do? Silly.
