but nothing from the age of 7 onwards was 'normal' for him.

How can he be expected to have any sense of what is normal. His childhood shaped him into what he became, in the end a rather sad and pathetic figure of a man. To say he had the choice to step out of that world...I think is too easy to say and impossible to do.
