why would he feel it necessary to make changes if he didnt feel anything was wrong, if he thought he was leading a normal life?

I know its going into pyscho-babble that I cant possibly substantiate, but I know enough (I think) to believe it cant possibly be as black and white (no pun intended) as him choosing to be 'normal' or not
