thing is, I read it as "I want to be playing as I get to the end of my career"

which seemed fair enough to me - it doesn't suit us or him to have him sitting around (and as you say, earning lots to do so).

but the real test is whether he'd be willing to put him money where his mouth is and be hit in the pocket in order to actually play. That is, would he willingly move somewhere and get a much lower wage, just in order to get a regular game?

If not, then it's all just words, and you're spot on. But if so, then I have some sympathy with him.
