They make a big deal with potential recruiters that they don't charge unless they place someone, so they shouldn't attempt to have any hold over you as the candidate.
I think things have changed immensely; once upon a time you registered with an agency and they would actively 'market' you. Now I think there are so many people looking for jobs that it's just a question of getting closest matches and they don't actually need to curry favour with candidates.
