There's an excellent book called "Midges in Scotland"

which has a section on repellents. It has a coy little mention of "a certain skin oil" and says that there's no reason why it should work

But it does work. It really does. I got bitten all the time before being told about it first by a Jock soldier (they use it on exercise in the Highlands) and then by someone who works in the Forestry Commission (they get plagued with midges). Now I hardly get bitten at all.
