Never use email provided by a service provider

because - as you just found out - if you switch you'll lose your address...

As others suggest use a web based service that provides *free* POP email so you can use it with Outlook, etc. - if you want - I'm happy with the web interface to be honest.

Don't use hotmail, it's s**t and a virus magnet. I use Yahoo and that's fine, except since I have a yahom.com email address POP access is not free (it is for co.uk addresses though). Many people rate googlemail/gmail and it is very good; but they do record *everything* so they can target advertising at you.
