I thought it was just an extention of him being a t**t drunk

and it being the reason he doesn't get serious roles, of which he takes offense to, but then still waltz's in the bar and sets fire to money to wind up other workers

So I guessing that's what it was about, more character building of why he constantly hits the dead ends, and doesn't get what he wants responsibility wise
