You've misquoted him there...

"A lot of people have said I should try and get a little bit of rest because the rigours of being a manager, the constant speaking to people on the phone, it does take it out of you. But my job is something I'm wholeheartedly committed to..."

So he's saying people have told him to take it easy as the job can take it out of you, and not 'I hate having to make a few phone calls, it's tiring' as you're suggesting. He then emphasises this point by going against that advice with his next sentence, paraphrased as 'they're telling me to take it easy, but I'm more concerned with getting the job done'.

Ie. he isn't whinging at all. Jesus, give the man a break people.
