Of course, knowing your arse from your elbow helps, but the above three things are essential.
So is the starting point: are they coming to a squad of solid pros with a a few bad eggs, are there a few too many players getting long in the tooth, or are they just lacking in certain areas? Generally, I think most managers are successful by identifying and signing a few key players to build on what they've got.
In that regard, we're in the s**t as the new manager will have virtually nothing to build on. Inevitably, this means what little money we have will need to be very thinly spread, meaning less quality. I don't care who we sign as manager, until we can get the nucleus of a squad together as full-time, signed-on Norwich players, the manager has a nigh-on impossible job to advance.
