i spoke to a mate about this very issue

Apparently there are very few advantages of going with plasma these days.
He warned me that LG have lousy after sales service, Sony components are pretty much the same as samsung but you pay for the brand. Panasonic I don't know about, but i've pretty much decided to go for the samsung 42"
