ref's have ALWAYS been a bit s**t, impossible not to make mistakes. Whats changed?

Not the standard of officals, for me they've improved its 3 things.

1)overly complicated rules. Compare the pre-prem rule book with the current.
2)Mass TV coverage, more cameras, more technology. Everythings gots 5 angles, slow mo, lines on the pitch etc etc. GOne are the days you got 1 dodgy slow mo from 1 angle.
3)Changes in players. Go down easier, more willign to attempt a con. In some ways. Players have alwasy conned ref's, but not in the 'falling over' way that happens now so much.
