I got a B for A-Level History by doing absolutely no work outside the lessons whatsoever, and minimal revision - when I got to Manchester University my lecturer refused me a grade for my first essay because it was so lazily researched and badly written, and I got 36% for one of my exams.

I sorted it out and got a First in the end, by working very hard in my 2nd and 3rd years, but it illustrates your point very nicely. Whole other world.
