go back to the start of the season and there was a fair bit of optimism - we were glad to have Bertrand back, and Clingan/Lupoli/Stephanovic/Hoolahan looked decent acquisitions.

It hasn't exactly (!) worked out that way but it wasn't obvious at the time - I suspect the board are making the same decisions on the same principles that they did in 2000-2004 when they generally worked great. What works one year might not work the next (or of corse it might) - no-one knows for sure. every football decision is a gamble.
