Of course this isn't the fans' fault. The fans have been incredible - and I despise Smudger and his rent-a-mob bunch of plankton. But sorry: the board have been able to take us for granted for far too long. How many other clubs who haven't played in the third flight for 49 years would actually applaud their players on a lap of honour which all but confirmed relegation to that miserable level?
The fans have always had the power in this situation. When it was Chase, we boycotted. When it's Delia, we turn up in almost ludicrous numbers, cheer and applaud her. It's ridiculous. And next season in League 1, it'll just continue whether we're in contention or not. We laugh at Newcastle fans' loyalty - but how are we any different?
